Globalization & Social Justice Program
Maymester/Summer (May 14-July 7)

Master Education Exchange has teamed with the Universidad de Buenos Aires to develop an exciting new summer program in Globalization and Social Justice. The program offers up to 10 semester credit hours of transferable undergraduate or graduate credit. English is the primary language of instruction.

A) ACADEMIC PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSIDAD DE BUENOS AIRES

Spanish Language.  4 credits. Courses are offered at the beginning, intermediate and advanced level depending upon the participant’s background. The beginning level does not require any previous knowledge of Spanish. Students will be placed in different classrooms according to their spanish language level which will be evaluated at UBA in their first class. Each student will receive specially designed teaching materials and complementary texts which respond both to group interests and to the reality of life in Argentina and Latin America

Globalization & Social Justice. 3 credits  The course will consist of an integrated set of lectures, readings, guest speakers and field trips. Participants who complete the program will be able to:

  • Identify major concepts associated with globalization
  • Critically analyze the impact of cultural, economic, and political globalization based on neo-liberal and neo-colonial ideology on the poor, vulnerable and oppressed in Argentina and the other parts of the world.
  • Discuss alternative approaches to globalization that promote just social structures and cultural practices
  • Discuss ways that new and innovative practice interventions and programs in use in Argentina may have utility for addressing social problems in the U.S.
  • Discuss the use of technology to further the global cause of social justice.
  • Demonstrate the capacity to advocate for changes in international policies and corporate practices that have a negative impact on the poor, oppressed and vulnerable of Argentina and the world.

Assessment: Students will be required to complete a set of readings and pass an exam covering the required material before the start of the program in Buenos Aires. During the program itself, participants will be required to keep a journal in which participants reflect on their efforts to apply globalization concepts to their experiences in Argentina.

Guided Research in  Globalization. 3 credit or Social Justice Service Learning  3-6 credits (intermediate Spanish or above required)

EXURSIONS AND ACTIVITIES DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM:

  • Visit to Madres de Plaza de Mayo University & Mothers march. To supplement lecture re: Political Globalization to illustrate influence of U.S. foreign policy and advocacy for human rights/social justice.
  • Excursion to Traditional Tango Venues to supplement Cultural Globalization over time.
  • Visit to a recycling center (Cartoneros) To supplement Economic globalization to illustrate concepts of resilience & strengths
  • Gastronomy lecture - Food lecture/Demonstration to supplement cultural globalization 
  • Ethnic Buenos Aires excursion (Jewish, Muslim, Asian) to supplement cultural globalization & concepts of assimilation, acculturation, and adaptation. 
  • Visit to recuperated factory to illustrate concept of empowerment 
  • Visit to a Villa (Retiro) & Comedor to illustrate structural inequality.

C) OVERNIGHT TRIP

Trip to Iguazú Falls, Provincia de Misiones

Lodging with breakfast and dinner (3 nights – 4 days);
Transportation by bus
Guided Excursion to Iguazu Falls (argentine side) including Iguazu National Park fee.
Gran Aventura Excursion (including boat ride);
Iguazu Forest Excursion (rappelling and tirolesa in the jungle);
Transfers in/out;
Permanent coordination and  on site assistance by MASTER EXCHANGE staff;

Price: USD 3600 all inclusive (room/15 meals per week, tuition at UBA, all identified excursions, transfers in/out and study abroad insurance)
